Darren Lurie
About Darren Lurie:
Darren Lurie was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and raised in Toronto, Canada. Growing up outside of the United States helped to shape his view of American culture and art. Currently living in Los Angeles, California, his work explores the concept of disposable culture in a city of excess.
Lurie’s work reconfigures the simple or mundane into an experience or result that is quite the opposite. In creating this juxtaposition, he invites the viewer to look beyond the familiar. His work addresses issues of control and process, and examines the limits of ordinary objects and daily rituals until a unique experience is formed.
In his most recent series ‘Change’, Lurie uses layers of unaltered coins to reveal figurative and iconic images that can be understood from a variety of social, political and religious perspectives. These works address issues of greed, consumerism, and governmental and religious influence, while referencing past historical styles from Pop Art to early renaissance iconography.
Lurie attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he received a B.A with honors in Art Studio, and held both individual and group exhibitions.
