Joe Strasser
Joe Strasser was born in California in 1968. Making art has been a lifelong interest for him, and in 1995 he graduated from Otis College of Art and Design after studying engineering at Cornell University and serving in the U.S. Navy. Upon graduating, Joe applied his artistic skills in the world of computer-generated imagery, moving from CD-ROM interactive games to animated TV commercials, and finally, to feature film. Currently at SONY Imageworks, Joe’s credits include “Watchmen”, “Beowulf”, “Open Season”, and “The Polar Express”.
His recent fine artwork has explored assemblage, painting, and object manipulation, with the boundaries between such categories becoming more and more obscured. Themes examined, especially in the assemblage pieces, include process, history, nostalgia, age, decay, layers, and raw materials. He prefers to make art that conveys humor, irony, and innocence.
“In my personal work, I strive to make art that is as far removed from the technical processes of my day job as possible. I like to incorporate materials that are organic, imperfect, and at times, pathetic. I really don’t rely on any particular medium. The idea comes to me first, and then the vision becomes realized using whichever media lend themselves to the most accurate translation from idea to physical object.” — Joe Strasser
