    eric_hanson.jpgAbout Eric Hanson:

Eric Hanson and Greg Downing run xRez Studio, a practice devoted to “gigapixel” photography, a new art form in the field which enables images of massive size and unprecedented fine detail. Relying on digital capture of several hundred images to comprise one image, their technique far surpasses even large-format film-based methods for sheer resolution. This approach allows numerous uses, from online deep explorations, to massive prints, to digital set creation for visual effects use.

This image is from the Yosemite Extreme Panoramic Imaging Project, a collaborative undertaking which set out to document Yosemite Valley in unprecedented and massive detail. 50 photographers were involved in shooting from 20 locations simultaneously, and all images were projected onto a 1 meter digital elevation model in the 3D animation Maya application.

Eric Hanson is a photographer and visual effects designer specializing in the creation of digital environments, having worked with leading visual effects houses such as Digital Domain, Sony Imageworks, Dream Quest Images, and Walt Disney Feature Animation. Eric is an active teacher, and is a Visiting Professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Eric is a member of the VES, IVRPA, ACM, and attended University of Texas at Austin. He wishes he could sleep more.

Greg Downing specializes in technical photography and image-based 3D technologies. His photographic work has been displayed in the American Museum of Natural History, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. He has worked in film production as a Lighting Technical Director at Rhythm & Hues and Sony Imageworks in Los Angeles.
